I am sure you have seen the bumper stickers and pieces of flair on Facebook referring to Edward Cullen, vampires and werewolves. Or maybe you have seen a movie trailer for a new flick debuting in November called Twilight. Curiosity got the best of me, and I dove into the first book of this vampire love story series Twilight by Stephanie Meyer.
As a fan of the Harry Potter series and fiction novels, I was excited to read the first book of the saga, Twilight. I had no clue what it was about but a friend loaned me a copy and as summer began, so did I.
The story starts out in a typical fashion- Bella arrives as the new girl in a small town called Forks. She moves in with her dad, Charlie, so her mom can travel with her new husband, Phil, a baseball player.
Immediately all the high school guys notice her. Her classmate Edward Cullen and his family intrigue her. The very first day of biology class when Bella sits beside Edward, he seems repulsed by her.
When visiting the La Push reservation, Bella tricks family friend Jacob Black into telling her legends of the local Quileute tribe. From there, Bella makes her own assumptions of Edward and the rest of the Cullens, which she later finds out to be true.
Fate intervenes when Edward saves her from an out of control car pinning her between her truck and the other vehicle.
Over time, the two fall in love. Another vampire named James, the villain of the story, interrupts their happiness when he and his band of vampire buddies come to Forks and decide to hunt Bella as a sport. Thus putting Edward and Bella’s love to the ultimate test.
I was hooked from the first few words until the last sentence. I wanted to become part of Bella’s mysterious and wonderful world. I felt that I connected with Bella’s clumsy nature and her inability to be without Edward, despite Jacob’s warnings.
If you are looking for a magical saga without the witchcraft references, then look no farther than Twilight. This story is sure to capture your heart as Edward and Bella fall deeply in love despite their extreme differences.
Twilight is the first of a four-book series of this engaging, unique love story. The next three books are New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn, respectively.
Summit Entertainment is set to release Twilight, the movie, on Nov. 21, 2008. Robert Pattinson (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) and Kristen Stewart (Panic Room) will star in the screen adaptation.
The author insisted that the onscreen adaptation of her masterpiece carry a PG-13 rating, so movie fans of the younger variety may enjoy it as well.
* Editor’s note: This story is the first of a book review series on the Twilight books.
