Eclipse, book three in the Twilight series, begins with strange occurrences and unexplained deaths happening in Seattle. Edward immediately thinks it’s a newborn and untamed vampire that’s unable to control its thrust for blood.
During this time, Bella desperately wants to be able to see Jacob, her best friend and werewolf, again. However, because of the danger Edward does not allow her to see him. One afternoon, Bella sneaks away and goes to La Push. She comes back unharmed and Edward agrees to allow Bella to see Jacob, but she must always have a phone with her.
A few days later, Bella asks Edward to make love to her. Edward refuses because of the danger of hurting her. However, he makes a request before he will agree to try: Bella must first marry him. Bella eventually accepts his proposal, realizing her love for him was uncomparable to anything else.
The Cullens learn that the havoc in Seattle isn’t being created by one newborn vampire, but by Victoria and an army of newborns. As they prepare for a fight, the Cullens join forces with the werewolves of La Push.
The book ends with the final battle between the newborn army and the Cullens/werewolf clan. Bella tells Jacob of her engagement plans to Edward and as a result, Jacob is emotionally crushed. He runs away from the pack and from home, leaving everything behind him.
This book was an interesting read. It fills in some of the details and you see the vampires and werewolves fight for a common purpose. I thought that was a neat concept, considering they despise each other.
Jacob seemed a bit whiney and clingy in this book. Every minute he wasn’t with Bella he wanted to see her. Before the final fight, Jacob twisted Bella into kissing him so that he wouldn’t intentionally kill himself. The feelings he has for Bella get in the way of their friendship.
I was not particularly a fan of Jacob in this book. Edward handled the situation very differently than I would have. He allowed Bella to still be friends and didn’t try to control her decision to see Jacob.
At first I didn’t want Edward and Bella together because he had left her, but he made up for it in this book. Jacob has a lot of make up for, not only to Bella, but to the readers as well.
Be on the lookout for Breaking Dawn, the newest book in the Twilight series.
