Amidst all the homework and essays due during the week, these shows provide an escape from the drudgery of school. Here is quick preview of what is to come from some of your favorite shows. It is premiere week! So do not feel too guilty if you feel the need to put down that text book and watch …
The Office
Season five of The Office should answer many questions that viewers have about the show’s quirky characters. What will Michael do about Jan’s decision to have a baby without his knowledge? Will he try and forge a new relationship with the Toby’s replacement in Human Resources? Are The Office romances in jeopardy? Will Phyllis spill the beans about Dwight and Angela to the rest of the office? Will the show’s writers finally let Jim pop the question to Pam?
Look for Amy Ryan to be around for several more episodes as new Human Resources lady and the possible return of Paul Lieberstein as Toby. All of your favorite Office cast members will be returning as well.
The Office kicks off season five on Sept. 25 with an hour-long episode at 9 p.m.
In the first episode, titled “Weight Loss,” viewers will see the Dunder Mifflin employees become obsessed with their weight and dieting. The Office will also follow Pam to art school in New York, so watch to see how she and Jim deal with being apart.
Series note: Tune in each week after The Office for the 15th and final season of the critically acclaimed drama ER.
Heroes
As the enticing previews for the coming season of Heroes suggest, there was truly a battle between good and evil. New faces emerged and the current heroes discovered if they are good or evil. There were new mysteries that evolve along with the looming questions from last season’s finale.
The third installment of Heroes, aptly named “Villains,” premiered Sept. 22. There was an hour-long recap of the first two chapters before the new chapter begins at 9 p.m.
According to a USA Today article by Bill Keveney, the new chapter started off right where the second ended and hit the ground running.
Some of the new faces included Brea Grant, who played a super fast thief that comes in contact with Hiro Nakamura in Tokyo. There was also a new hero, Tracy Strauss, played by Ali Larter, who surprisingly looks just like Niki Sanders who viewers were led to believe died in a fire.
Keveney also writes that several of the characters will become more complex as the season progresses. Peter Petrelli will struggle with his identity as a hero. Dr. Mohinder Suresh will be forced to make a big decision when he has a breakthrough in his research of the abilities the heroes are manifesting. A new character from last season, Maya Herrera will find romance with Suresh as they work together to find out more about the abilities.
“Villains” was full of twists and turns in the form of new powers and new villains and will not disappoint fans who tune in each Monday.
Grey’s Anatomy
The season six finale of Grey’s Anatomy left viewers with a small hope that Meredith and Derek are finally back together and on the right track. But they are not the only doctors at Seattle Grace that are finding love. Callie and Dr. Hahn are also beginning a relationship of sorts. Christina is finally able to move past her broken heart and becomes interested in a military doctor played by Kevin McKidd. “Dr. McSteamy” himself may even settle down and stop playing the field.
After breaking off their relationship, Izzie and George will also move on. Contrary to many rumors, Katherine Heigl’s character will not be killed off by a brain tumor.
Meanwhile, Bailey and the chief are not happy after finding out that Seattle Grace has fallen from its No. 1 spot as the best teaching hospital.
Episode one, “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” will premiere Sept. 25 at 9 p.m.
Dancing With the Stars
The season seven cast of Dancing With the Stars features many firsts for the popular reality contest. The show’s oldest and youngest contestants will join 11 others to compete for the “Dancing with the Stars” crown.
Some of the famous contestants will be tested as ballroom dancing is far outside many of their comfort zones. Super Bowl champion Warren Sapp, reality TV star Kim Kardashian and recent Olympic gold-medalist Misty May-Treanor are just a few of stars who will try and outdo each other on the dance floor this season.
Dancing With the Stars is always entertaining for all ages and this season will be no different.
Viewers were sure to be dancing along at home when the reality show presented a three-night live event on Sept. 22 at 8 p.m.
The Mentalist
If you have ever watched Psych on USA Network, CBS’s new fall show The Mentalist will seem vaguely familiar.
Golden Globe nominee Simon Baker stars as Patrick Jane, a consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation. His super sharp observation skills and his experience help him solve tough cases. Jane was once a semi-celebrity for pretending to use psychic abilities to solve cases. His flair for theatrics and narcissism puts him at odds with his fellow agents, especially Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon.
The pilot episode of The Mentalist introduced viewers to Jane’s interesting life and an even more interesting murder case. The team is sure that a double homicide is the work of a serial killer. Jane used his skills and convinced them otherwise in time to catch the real killer.
The new series,The Mentalist, premiered on the CBS network Sept. 23 at 9 p.m.
CSI Miami
Last season’s CSI: Miami fans were left hanging when the finale concluded with Horatio Caine lying shot on an airport tarmac. After battling a private investigator that was tearing apart the CSI team by exposing secrets and dealing with threats on Horatio’s life, the team ran into more trouble from illegal weapons distributors. Caine and the team had just arrested one of the major players in the weapons ring when he was shot.
The first episode of season seven began with the team of CSIs searching for Horatio’s shooter. Since it is unlikely that the network would let one of its biggest stars be killed off, there is almost certainly an ulterior motive for the shooting. It is possible the team is faking Horatio’s death to make the weapons distributors feel comfortable enough to slip up.
A continuing story line that is present in season seven is Horatio’s attempts to fix his relationship with his son.
The team was also introduced to a new medical examiner portrayed by Megalyn Echikunwoke.
CSI: Miami’s new season will surely be full of interesting and difficult cases for the Miami Dade Police Department to solve. The fan favorite returned to CBS on Sept. 22 at 10 p.m.
