The end is here. Again. The USS Gloria has landed back on earth and the crew is ready to tell their story. The only way to hear their story, though, is to listen to the new record by Brave Saint Saturn titled Anti-Meridian.
Brave Saint Saturn is the brainchild of former Five Iron Frenzy frontman Reese Roper. It was an outlet for his frustration with issues that he felt were too heavy for Five Iron Frenzy songs.
The three Brave Saint Saturn releases are a trilogy of concept albums telling the story of the spacecraft known as the USS Gloria traveling to Saturn’s Moons. Eight years after the story began, the final installment in the trilogy is done.
This is the third installment in the concept album series, so picking up this album without listening to the other two might confuse you. This is one of the most unique concepts I have ever come across. Throughout the three albums the band tells the story of the crew, what they are going through, and then ties those things in with anything ranging from politics to religion to spiritual walks to just life in general.
Now if you’re a fan of Five Iron Frenzy, you will definitely enjoy this album because it still embodies Reese Roper’s very unique voice.
Even if you aren’t a fan of Five Iron Frenzy or have never even listened to Five Iron Frenzy, this is still a good album to check out for a few reasons.
The melodies and song structures vary so much from song to song that it is hard to put the band or this album into a genre, but if I had to fit them somewhere it would have to be astro-rock. Very spacey synth-driven beats with vocoder-laden vocals can go straight into a driving grunge rock style with little hip-hop parts tucked away within a break beat.
Your musical thirst will stay quenched by the vast array of style that Brave Saint Saturn delivers on Anti-Meridian as well as their other two albums.
