You’ve got mail, BSU letter ministry

Soon empty mailboxes may become a thing of the past, because starting this semester Baptist Student Union is developing a ministry through letters.
“The point of this letter ministry is to make sure that every student has a letter in their P.O. Box each month,” said Katie Porter, sophomore early childhood education and the BSU hospitality chairwoman.
Many students at North Greenville do not receive mail throughout the school year, so BSU has taken the initiative to reach out to all students in writing.
“The people that will be writing the letters are volunteers from BSU,” said Porter.
The volunteers are responsible for writing to and praying for a set number of students.
“We know how sad it is to go to the post office and not have any mail, so we just thought it would be a good way to do some ‘in-reach’ on the campus,” said Porter.
BSU is hoping to use the letters as an opportunity to minister to the student body.
“I decided to start the ministry because, as the BSU hospitality chair, I wanted to find a way for students to minister to other students,” said Porter.
Porter hopes to keep the ministry going through the remainder of this year. However, this will depend on the number of volunteers and the flow of the ministry’s progress.
“We have about 30 volunteers signed up to help, but we are looking for more people who are willing to commit to write and pray for students,” said Porter.
When they receive letters in their mailboxes, students are encouraged to write back with prayer needs. The letters will have mailbox numbers on them if recipients wish to contact the BSU volunteers.
