The McCormick Cup and The McCormick Crown are campus-wide competitions that put male housing against male housing and female housing against female housing. It is going on until the end of the semester.
In the fall of 2004, the assistant coordinators and Billy Watson began to see a problem with the lack of student participation on campus. Watson and the assistant coordinators came up with a solution to this plight.
The McCormick Cup was introduced to encourage dorms to work together and to get involved in campus life. In the next year, The McCormick Crown was brought into the picture. The Cup and the Crown are basically the same awards with only one difference: the McCormick Cup is presented to the winning male dorm, and the McCormick Crown is for the winning female dorm.
“The McCormick Crown is a great way to have a friendly competition amongst the students here. It’s a lot of fun to just get out there with people you may not see on a normal occasion and fight for a title. Of course, living on Middle Howard, you know you’re expected to show up and do everything you can to retain the crown and earn bragging rights for another year,” said Heather Ferguson, junior interdisciplinary studies.
In order to win, each dorm must gain points through academic achievements, room checks, athletic support, social and spiritual events, competitions and service projects.
For academics the average GPA for each dorm is taken and then multiplied by 10,000 points. An additional 10,000 points is given to the dorm with the best GPA and also to the dorm that has shown the most improvement in their GPA.
A perfect room check can win a dorm 50,000 points. For each penalty, the award is reduced by 10,000 points. A room check that results in three or more penalties gains no points for the dorm.
For participating in athletic support, social/spiritual events and service projects, a dorm can gain 100,000 points for each.
A possible 150,000 points can be earned by dorms that participate in the mini competitions that are hosted. Participation earns each dorm an automatic 10,000. First place earns an additional 20,000 points, while second earns 10,000 extra points and third place adds 5,000 points.
“To Date the McCormick Cup and Crown has been a great success but as always more participation is appreciated. Our goal is to help students to find a way to participate on campus. So if anybody is interested, contact me or Karla Simpson in Student Services,” said Donald Lily, intramural sports coordinator.
“We have had a very good year with participation, and we look forward to more as the year progresses. The scores for each dorm will be posted on the walls in Student Services,” said Karla Simpson, student services.
