“We need something more than a vehicle and parks to go to,” Henrietta Hughes said at a town hall meeting President Barack Obama held last week. “We need our own kitchen and our bathroom. Please help.”

“We’re going to do everything we can to help you,” Obama replied. “But there are a lot of people like you.”

Another man at the Fort Myers meeting stated how he wanted his unemployment benefits to equal the salary of his last job, obviously not realizing that the entire point of it being less is to get him back to work somehow.

This is simply frightening. We, in the words of Michelle Malkin, “have become a nation of moochers.” We don’t want to do anything for ourselves.

Obama promised us not only the moon, but the stars to go with it. He was supposed to change the country and how the world sees it. He’s supposedly going to create so many jobs that Caterpillar, Inc. can hire back most of the 22,000 people they just laid off.

Reality check, please. The CEO of Caterpillar, Jim Owens, said on abcnews.com that there will be “more layoffs before we start hiring again.”

Hughes’ story is heartbreaking; she is currently homeless, but the government’s job never has been and never will be to shell out free stuff to citizens for not doing anything. If she wants to be a charity case, she should go to a charity.

Hughes and every American need to learn this. Times change, and jobs will cease to exist, but new jobs will be created. It’s on you to adapt, not the government.

Another man jumped up and exclaimed how he’s in college and has been stuck working at McDonald’s for four and a half years. He wants more benefits for holding a job for four and a half years.

Here’s a tip. Educate yourself, which is what you’re already doing. Congratulations. Secondly, McDonald’s never set up its business for you. Businesses exist to make money. If you are not happy with your current situation, don’t call up the White House, Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid. Bring about all this Change that Obama talked about by yourself.

For the last couple of weeks, I’ve actually been embarrassed to be American, which says a lot. I can’t figure out why people think the Declaration of Independence’s clause, “the pursuit of happiness,” means people should automatically be made happy for doing nothing.

And this is all the result of the dumbing down of America. Nobody’s a loser, everybody’s a winner. Don’t take score at the children’s soccer games, you know, so they won’t feel bad when they lose. Everything is about self-esteem and making everyone feel good.

And, if you haven’t noticed, it’s created a generation of the laziest, most spoiled, selfish people in what is supposed to be the greatest country in the world. For some reason, we want those in charge to give us our wildest dreams.

Somehow, those “wildest dreams” are far from what we’re capable. Just look at government housing projects and the mess they have been in since day one. Look at any socialist economy, such as Cuba or Europe. They were all in trouble way before we were.

Lastly, let me be honest. Every time the government does more for the people, it gets more power, and that’s what this is all about.

Keep this in mind. Obama’s half-brother lives in a rusted out shack in Kenya and makes less than $1 a month. Obama hasn’t bothered to give him a pot or a pan, what makes you think he’ll follow through and give you a whole kitchen?
