“This win will show us that when we play as a team and face adversity, we can play with anybody anywhere anytime,” outfielder Rand Stegall, junior business, said of the team’s momentum building win.
NGU trailed 4-2 going into the eighth inning but began their biggest comeback of the season when first baseman Tyler Callicutt, junior accounting, hit a two-run home run to tie the game.
In the 10th inning, the Crusaders’ bats got hot when they opened the inning with three straight singles from Callicutt, Derek Fulmer, freshman undecided, and Anthony Foulk, freshman sport management. Foulk’s single brought Fulmer home to put North Greenville up 5-4.
The Tornado pitching staff began to fall apart and the Crusaders took full advantage of the mistakes by scoring five more runs to build a comfortable lead.
“Our clutch performance during the later innings of the game was due to teamwork,” Fulmer said of the extra-inning comeback. “Finally, we played baseball as a team instead of for each other individually.”
Second baseman Cory Hinton, junior sport management, led NGU at the plate finishing 3-for-5, knocking in one run, and scoring two runs. David Frazier, freshman sport management, Markus Duckworth, sophomore undecided, Dayton Lupton, junior sport management, and Foulk finished with one RBI each.
Devin Vance, senior business, pitched eight innings for NGU striking out five Brevard batters. Derek Brown, sophomore history, picked up the win for the Crusaders allowing only one hit in two scoreless innings of relief.
“Our team is working very hard at this point in the season to pick up some key wins,” Fulmer said. “We definitely have the talent. We really strive to improve our game each time out, anything else is a failure.”
North Greenville’s next game is tomorrow against Erskine at 1:30 p.m. at Ashmore Field.
