Well, spring is in the air, and here at NGU, that usually means one thing—everyone is getting engaged. That’s right, we were all warned from our very first day here as freshmen, or even as far back as our first Encounter Day, to be prepared for that “ring by spring.” Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Finding Your Fiance 1320 began being offered in the spring—required text: What to Expect When You’re Expecting…Him to Propose. Who knows, maybe Intro to Real Life will be offered the following fall.

Lately, it seems proposals are coming left and right with more and more ladies brandishing bright, new rings all around. If you listen closely, you’ll hear it—the hushed, murmurings of dates and diamonds, hubbies and honeymoons. Maybe it’s in the water, but more than likely, it is simply the classy, romantic nature of spring that is to blame for all the endless smiles on brides-to-be.

Of course, they have every right to be ecstatic. Spring is the season of renewal and fresh beginnings, two significant elements of the wedding process. Add the final moments of school with the excitement of planning a wedding and you will inevitably find a substantial amount of joy.

So how do we explain all of this magic? How do we comprehend what it feels like to kneel in front of the most beautiful woman you’ve ever seen and watch her nod her head and smile? Ultimately, we can never fully understand what takes place during a proposal; we will never be able to explain on a human level that wondrous feeling of being in love. The ability to love and be loved in return is an unfathomable privilege that is much bigger than us, so that is where we must look for guidance throughout the process. God, who is love itself, is the only way we can understand true companionship.

The only way that new love between a guy and a girl can be better experienced is when it is viewed the way God views it. Certainly it is unbelievable to gaze into the eyes of someone who loves you with everything he or she has, but how much more so to know that Christ looks at you that way. To think that Jesus the King, the Maker of all things, has eyes for you; to imagine that He has pursued you with everything He has, what a thought!

Whether or not you get your ring this spring, or you’re still working on your M.R.S. degree, the important thing to remember is that Christ’s reach for your heart will always be sufficient and will never weaken. No matter where you find yourself, in thirty days or thirty years, His hand is always warm and His side is always free. While it is crucial that we never forget the magic of true love and the sunny joy of engagement, we must always remember the love of Christ that has chased us since Creation. We must always remember that from the beginning, God’s treasured activity with man was simply to walk with him.
