The Crusader softball team entered last Thursday’s game on a two game losing streak, which they hadn’t had since the beginning of the season when they lost their first eight. They traveled to Milligan College for a twin bill in an effort to regain some of their momentum.
They shut out Milligan in the first game 2-0 thanks to an impressive outing by Kristyn Smith, sophomore biology. NGU went into the sixth inning with Milligan knotted at 0-0. Bridget Watson, senior business administration, and Hope Brewer, junior sport management, scored the only runs of the game, but it was enough for the victory.
The Crusaders played another great game in the second game of the doubleheader, beating the Buffaloes 5-1 and quickly erasing any doubt about the remainder of the season.
North Greenville then headed to Tusculum for another doubleheader on Saturday, looking to extend their modest two-game winning streak.
The first game started off much like the Milligan games did as both teams went scoreless until the sixth inning. North Greenville again came through, scoring four runs in the final three innings while holding the Pioneers to one run, to go on and win the first game 4-1.
The Crusaders now had a chance to do something they hadn’t done all year in the next game in the form of a four-game winning streak. The first win of the day tied their season high of three straight wins.
In the second half of the doubleheader, NGU was in control from the start, holding the Tusculum Pioneers to only one run while scoring three of their own to win their fourth game in a row.
Watson and Karli Taylor, freshman undecided, combined to go 4-for-7 and produced two of the three runs scored by the Lady Crusaders on the day. The Lady Crusader pitching staff combined to give up only two hits in the final game.
The team is on a season high four-game winning streak after sweeping Milligan and Tusculum and finishing up their six-game road trip with a 4-2 mark. They look to keep their winning ways alive as they start a four-game home stand against Montreat College on today at noon. The Lady Crusaders are now 14-14 and are 14-6 since losing their first eight games.
