In 2009, the North Greenville golf team had a stellar season finishing in the top 10 in seven of eight tournaments including three top five finishes and one tournament win. This season the team hopes to improve on their recent success and become one of the top athletic programs at North Greenville.

The Crusaders started their season on Sept. 14-15 as they competed against eight other schools in the Anderson Invitational and came away with a third place finish overall. Brad Caldwell, senior sport management, was named tournament champion.

“It was a good opening tournament for us,” Pitillo said. “Obviously I am extremely proud of Brad, but I am also proud of the team as a whole.”

North Greenville opened day one of the Invitational playing under clear skies and warm weather. The Crusaders took advantage of the nice conditions to shoot an opening round 305 to end the first day in third place. Caldwell led the way for North Greenville with an opening round 74. Other individual scores from day one were Danny Dippel, freshman undecided, who opened his college career with a 76 and Brandon Coggins, senior elementary education, who shot an opening round 78.

“The first day was a good day for us,” head coach Jeff Pittillo said. “The guys played very well and we put ourselves in position to win on the second day.”

The second day of the Invitational started much differently than the first as the Crusaders faced cloudy skies and a chance of rain. However, the team adjusted to the weather and shot a final round 306 to finish the tournament in third place overall just eight strokes behind tournament team champion Lincoln Memorial.

In the individual standings, Caldwell closed the tournament champion after shooting a total 144 and winning a three-hole playoff on the final day. Dippel finished the tournament with a total score of 153 while Coggins finished with a tournament total of 154.

The Crusaders’ next tournament will be Sept. 28-29 in Greenville, Tenn. at the Tusculum Invitational.
