Wicked pleases audience with music and fun
Posted by The Skyliner on February 10th, 2010“Are people born wicked or is wickedness thrust upon them?” This is the number one question that is raised and answered in the hit Broadway musical, Wicked.
Back by popular demand, The New York Times calls Wicked “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster.” Wicked is the winner of 26 major awards, including a Grammy and three Tony Awards.
Wicked, the spin-off of The Wizard of Oz, is showing at the Peace Center in Greenville from Jan. 27 to Feb. 14.
This play is based on the novel by Gregory Maguire and tells the story of how the Wicked Witch of the West came to be.
Elphaba, who later became the so-called Wicked Witch, was born to the governor of Oz and his wife. From birth she has been green. Throughout her life she has been looked down upon by her family and has taken care of her younger sister, Nessarose, who is in a wheelchair.
When Elphaba and Nessarose go to Shiz, their new school, Elphaba meets Galinda, who one day ends up being Glinda the Good.
Through trying to find freedom for the animals and keeping them educated, Elphaba’s magical abilities are found out and she ends up having a personal audience with the Wizard of Oz.
While on this journey of trials and tribulations, she meets the man of her dreams and, for the first time, a friend.
This play is full of excitement, love, hurt, music and exhilaration. It also has crowds all over the world cheering in support.
Along with thousands of others who have and will witness this extraordinary musical, Megan Owenby, junior math major, Brian Darnell, junior interdisciplinary major, and Casey Ditty, junior interdisciplinary major, were three from North Greenville who witnessed it.
“It was not only pleasing to the eyes, but also pleasing to the ears,” Ditty said.
“It was truly a spectacular display of theatrical and musical ability,” Owenby said.
If you missed Wicked this time, it will be at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in Charlotte, NC from May 19 until June 13, 2010.
