On Friday, Feb. 12, male students at North Greenville University had the rare opportunity to visit female students’ dorms during a residential hall event. But make no mistake—students were still well chaperoned. Residential advisors were present and rules were enforced to protect the safety and integrity of everyone involved.
A few of the rules that were observed included: all males turning in their student identification cards to an RA during their visit, all doors being kept open and students’ feet staying on the floor at all times. Male RA’s were also on duty in the female dorms to monitor the event.
Only one other residential hall event takes place during an academic year at NGU, falling on the weekend of Halloween. Could there possibly be an opportunity for more residential hall events in the future? Are students at NGU mature enough to handle more of these events? Nathan Arms, sophomore, outdoor leadership, said, “I think that there should be dorm visitation for certain hours throughout the week.” Alex Smith, sophomore, outdoor leadership, echoed Arms’ feelings when he said, “…At least allow certain hours a day to visit.”
Mike Darrow, junior youth ministry and a men’s residential advisor, believes that more residential hall events should be scheduled, but he also appreciates the level of accountability that is upheld by the current system. Drawing on many years of experience working with young people, Mike Landrum, Head of the Youth Ministry Department, believes that more residential hall events could be successfully instituted, although finding out how many more would simply take trial and error.
