As a vampire, Robert Pattinson is memorable, but as 20-something, troubled Tyler Hawkins, Pattinson has created an even more real and noteworthy character. In his newest movie since the Twilight saga, Remember Me gives us a different view of the actor.
My expectations for Remember Me were quite low, especially when I noticed “Edward Cullen” was starring in it. I figured it was another love story, one of those “can’t have you but want you anyway” types; however, I was shocked to find two real characters drawn together in a strange way by fate and tragedy.
The story begins with the whirring of a train station, a mother and daughter and a gunshot. It has such an unexpected and startling beginning that I could barely believe it. The plot continues with Tyler, a college student in New York who is doing what college students do best, procrastinating and sleeping.
He is joined by his roommate Aiden Hall, who provides the comic relief and honesty needed in Tyler’s life. Tyler’s sister plays an equally important role in the story, helping to inspire tenderness and caring in Tyler while both deal with a dysfunctional family.
Tyler and Aiden get into trouble together as good friends do and eventually land in jail, where they unknowingly meet someone who will change their lives. Shortly after, Hawkins uses his charm and wit to meet Ally Craig, a girl who began living life to the fullest after she watched her mother get shot in a train station when she was 11. She even eats dessert first, a trait Hawkins can barely resist. Like most love story plots, they date, they laugh and they fall in love.
Throughout the movie, I expected the normal love story thing to happen. They break up, realize they need each other and then they get back together.
While this does happen, there are many unexpected qualities about their relationship that make them irresistible to watch.
Both characters are incredibly well developed with intricate histories that would make them a couple to last. Only in the end can the audience really see how much reality and tragedy combine to create a memorable story.
After heart-wrenching twists and witty dialogue, I left the movie in tears.  Remember Me is definitely a movie that will stay in my memory as a truly amazing love story.
