North Greenville University has been involved with the Travelers Rest chapter of Relay for Life for several years but recently decided to begin the Relay for Life pageants on campus. The pageants are a great way to raise money for cancer awareness.
This semester NGU held both Mr. and Miss Relay for Life Pageants on March 27 in Turner Chapel. Contestants competed in casual and formal wear categories.
To make the pageant a fundraiser, the contestants had to pay a fee to enter. Contestants in the 2010 Miss Relay for Life Pageant paid an additional fee to compete in the Miss Photogenic category. Off campus visitors also had to pay an admission fee to attend the pageant.
Another way the pageants raised money for Relay for Life is the Crowd’s Choice Award. In the lobby of Turner Chapel, there were jars set up for people to cast votes for their favorite contestant. The contestant whose jar contained the most money won the Crowd’s Choice Award. The contestants were given one vote per penny donated.
The 2010 Mr. Relay for Life Pageant began at 5 p.m. Current Miss NGU Leah Gravely introduced the judges and the contestants. There were 11 male students that competed in casual and formal wear competitions.
After the casual wear competition, there was a 10-minute intermission during which the audience had a chance to donate money in the name of their favorite contestant. The male Crowd’s Choice Winner was Phillip Beacham, junior youth ministry.
Second runner up overall was Sam Holt, senior marketing. First runner up was Josh Putnam, senior marketing. Landon Senn, sophomore interdisciplinary studies, won first place in the 2010 Mr. Relay for Life Pageant.
The 2010 Miss Relay for Life Pageant started at 7:30 p.m. with Billy Watson, director of Student Services, welcoming the crowd and introducing Gravely as the announcer for the pageant.
The ladies first took the stage in the casual wear competition. There were around 30 female students who competed in the pageant. In divisions according to their class ranking.
Audience members once again had the chance to donate money in the name of their favorite contestants. A Crowd’s Choice Winner from each division was announced at the end of the pageant.
After a short intermission, the ladies took part in the formal wear competition. After the judges tallied their votes, the winners were announced.
Miss Photogenic was awarded to Amanda Styles, freshman early childhood education.
The Crowd’s Choice awards for each division were handed out next. The Crowd’s Choice winners were Ansley Boltin, freshman secondary education, Elisabeth Depp, sophomore early childhood education, Elizabeth Abbott, junior early childhood education, and Beth Reynolds, senior interdisciplinary studies.
The winners of each division were then announced. Catherine Neely, freshman health and wellness promotion, won the freshman division. Cortani “Pearl” Mims, sophomore business administration, took first place in the sophomore division. The junior division was won by Hayley Williams, junior linguistics and early childhood education. Autumn McAbee, senior elementary education, took first place in the senior division.
The 2010 Miss Relay for Life Pageant title was then awarded to Katelin Newton, sophomore elementary education.
The weekend’s pageants were an enjoyable way to raise money for cancer awareness and research. The contestants all had fun and were able to be a part of a great cause.
