Softball hits 20-win plateau

On April 10, the North Greenville softball team looked to honor its seniors on Senior Day with two victories over Truett McConnell College in a weekend double header. The seniors took over on the field and lead the Lady Crusaders to a sweep of the Lady Bears, winning game one 1-0 and game two 6-1.
In game one, fans witnessed a pitching duel between North Greenville and Truett McConnell. Kristyn Smith, junior biology, was on the mound for North Greenville and pitched three solid innings, giving up only three hits and recording six strikeouts. Taylor Roof, sophomore health and wellness, pitched four innings of relief and did not allow a hit while striking out six batters.
On offense, the Crusaders were held in check. Jessica Turner, senior mathematics, and Shealy Broome, senior health and wellness, and Tia LaFreniere, senior outdoor leadership, each finished the game 1-2 and Sarah Griffith, sophomore mathematics, recorded the game’s only RBI when she drew a bases-loaded walk in the third inning.
The bats of the Lady Crusaders would come alive in game two as North Greenville scored six runs on eight hits. Turner was once again the top performer at the plate, finishing 2-2 with a three-run home run in the second inning. Broome was 2-3 in the game and LaFreniere, Rachel Holeman, freshman biology and Krysta Laird, senior outdoor leadership, each drove in a run.
Laura Hopper, freshman intercultural studies, started the game for North Greenville and pitched 2 2/3 innings of no-hit softball while striking out two. Kimberly Robertson, freshman biology, picked up her fourth win of the season as she pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing only one run on five hits and recording two strikeouts.
The Lady Crusaders (20-15) played in a double header against Mars Hill College on Monday. North Greenville’s next game will be played tomorrow in a double header against Brevard College beginning at 2 p.m. at the North Greenville Softball Complex.
